Thereon means on the thing that was just mentioned, as in The cap should be positioned above the container before being placed thereon (translation: The cap should be positioned above the container before being placed on it). Thereon is formal and is often used in legal language. It can also mean immediately after the thing just mentioned, as in When the jury is assembled, the trial should proceed thereon. The word thereupon can be used as a synonym for both senses of thereon. Example: The book is about the introduction of the printing press in Europe and the effects thereon.
