Braine turns to him with the grave, sad smile that is now the only smile his face knows.
“Where are the men who were following me,” he said, and Mr Braine smiled.
Braine stops in the road and looks helplessly into Everet's face.
“They will have some of the men to help them,” said Mr Braine.
Murray turned away with an impatient gesture, and exchanged glances with Mr Braine.
“Whoever it was must have heard every word we said,” whispered Mr Braine.
Braine was out of reach for the present, so he began to search for the man Vroon.
“You do know, and you will not speak,” cried Mr Braine passionately.
“You are speaking without conviction, Braine,” said Murray, sternly.
“I give you my word as a gentleman, sir,” said Mr Braine, coldly.
