popliteal artery n.
An artery that is the continuation of the femoral artery in the popliteal space, bifurcating into the anterior and posterior tibial arteries, with branches to the lateral and medial superior genicular, middle genicular, lateral and medial inferior genicular, and sural arteries.
At the back of the knee the popliteal artery can be felt beating.
The aneurism was cured by ligation of the vein above and below the communication and proximal ligature of the popliteal artery.
It is not uncommon, indeed, on amputating above the knee, to find even the popliteal artery plugged by a clot.
