In most spiny-rayed fishes it runs parallel with the outline of the back.

At this period the spiny-rayed Teleosteans, dominant in the seas of the present day, made their first appearance.

The ventral fins thus connected, as seen in most spiny-rayed fishes, are said to be thoracic.

A very few spiny-rayed families are wholly confined to the northern seas.

In the Cretaceous appear the first spiny-rayed fishes, derived probably from herring-like forms.
