Usage

What does twat mean? Twat is vulgar slang for “vagina.” It's also used, especially in British English slang, a way to call someone as stupid, useless, or otherwise contemptible person. Content warning: the following sections include further references to sexual and sexist content, which is involved in the history and use of the slang term. This article also also contains references to other items of strong language.

Etymology

Origin of twat

First recorded in 1650–60; perhaps originally a dialectal variant of thwat, thwot (unattested), presumed Modern English outcome of Old English thwāt, (unattested), akin to Old Norse thveit “cut, slit, forest clearing” (from northern English dialect thwaite “forest clearing”)

Explanation

A twat is either a vagina or a jerk. Either way, this is a very vulgar, obscene word that should be avoided. You don't hear twat as often as some other four-letter words, but that doesn't mean it isn't offensive. Calling someone a twat is a very dirty way of calling them an idiot, jackass, or bozo. If you refer to a woman's genitals as a twat, that might be even more offensive. So unless you want to get punched in the face or sent to the principal's office, just don't say it.
