Coined by Thomas Chalmers Robertson (1907-89), South African ecologist, in his essay “Racism Comes to Power in South Africa: The Threat of White Nationalism” (1948)

Though the definitions of white nationalism and white supremacy are similar, white supremacy is often viewed as having a broader meaning. In contrast, white nationalism is considered a variety of white supremacy that is generally tied to the belief that a separate geographic region or territory is a birthright granted to white people.
Critics of the term white nationalism argue that it is a euphemistic way to talk about white supremacy under the somewhat neutral guise of nationalism. Considering this, it is important to pay careful attention when using this term.
