SCOTUS' landmark same-sex marriage decisions Wednesday are affecting more than just gay couples.

In discussing Duns Scotus, I have given less from his writings than has been my wont with other philosophers.

"Ego autem redeo ad sententiam Avicembronis," is a formula in Duns Scotus's discussion of the principle of matter.

Scotus, who sat opposite the king, answered, "Only the breadth of the table."

It is scholastic realism—realism as intense and unmitigated as that of Scotus Erigena a thousand years ago.

He had undergone special training for this work with his father-in-law and his Christian friend, Michael Scotus.
