descansar, verb:
to rest; to have a rest

As the old saying goes, ‘All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy’, so we need the word for to rest, descansar:

Paramos en un bar para descansar.
We stopped in a bar to rest or to have a rest.

No descansé en todo el día.
I didn’t have a moment’s rest all day.

Descansar is used in two special phrases. First, when someone goes to bed you say:

¡Que descanses!*
Sleep well!

And you may hear Spanish speakers talking about someone who has died using the phrase:

¡Que en paz descanse!*
God rest his soul.

tu tío, que en paz descanse*
your uncle, God rest his soul
