H-beam vs. I-beam: What's the difference?

In welding, H-beam and I-beam refer to types of beams that are similar in shape but constructed differently. An H-beam is formed by welding or riveting three separate pieces of metal together, and all three parts are equal in thickness. An I-beam is made of a single piece of metal that has been shaped, and has more tapered edges.
