A Smarter, Faster Way to Explore Words
If you’ve noticed things look a little different, you’re right! Dictionary.com and Thesaurus.com have been completely reimagined with an updated look, faster performance, and a more intuitive design that makes exploring language easier than ever before.
For more than 30 years, Dictionary.com has been the people’s dictionary: a trusted, free resource built for learners, writers, students, teachers, and anyone curious about words. This redesign represents the next step in that mission, bringing a more modern experience while keeping the content you rely on exactly the same. What hasn’t changed is our commitment to keeping both sites completely free, just as they’ve always been.
A Faster, Cleaner Experience
To support the millions of people who search with us every day, we rebuilt both sites from the ground up. Pages load more quickly, navigation is easier to follow, and clutter has been noticeably reduced. You’ll also find fewer ads and a more seamless way to move between Dictionary.com and Thesaurus.com, so jumping from a definition to a synonym feels instantly natural.
Fresh, Modern Look
Every part of the site has a new visual design that’s easier on the eyes and simpler to browse. Whether you’re looking up a quick definition or diving deep into a synonym set, the new layout makes the experience more engaging from start to finish.
Prioritized Clarity and Relevance
As part of this update, we reorganized how entries are structured so that the most relevant and commonly used information appears first. You’ll also see clearer distinctions between related concepts, along with new Frequently Asked Questions on Thesaurus.com that explain how similar words differ. Throughout these changes, our lexicographers have continued their ongoing work of refining, updating, and expanding entries across the site. While the presentation has evolved, no definitions or synonym sets were revised as part of this transition.
The previous sidebar navigation has been removed to create a cleaner reading experience, and entries now follow a straightforward top-to-bottom flow. British, Scientific, and Cultural definitions are still available within each entry. You can scroll to find them or select the labels at the top to jump directly to the version you need.
More Ways to Learn and Explore
People use Dictionary.com and Thesaurus.com for far more than definitions. They come to explore, learn, and satisfy their curiosity about language. To support that journey, we’ve updated quizzes and improved our featured articles and pop-culture dictionary entries, giving you a clearer path to the topics that interest you most. Slideshows have also been reworked into richer, more accessible articles.
In the works is an updated article search that will soon make all article content discoverable directly through the main search bar, creating one central place to find everything you need.
We’re also continuing to expand our editorial offerings, including our ongoing Word Drops featuring the latest new entries, along with fresh articles designed to help you dive even deeper into how words evolve and what they mean today.

We’ll be making ongoing changes throughout the coming year because language never stops evolving, and neither do we.
