blockade

From the headlines: After weekend peace talks with Iran broke down, the United States announced a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. The White House said it would stop all Iranian ships from entering the waterway, through which twenty percent of the world’s oil travels. To enforce the restriction, the U.S. military has deployed 10,000 troops, as well as more than 100 aircraft and twelve ships. The tactic is meant to pressure Iran to reopen the strait to all traffic by halting the country’s economic trade.

concede

From the headlines: Following a decisive defeat in Hungary’s general election, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán moved quickly to concede to challenger Péter Magyar. fauna

noun: all the animal life in a particular region

From the headlines: As part of a broader effort to restore native fauna to the Brazilian rainforest, four blue-and-yellow macaws have been relocated to an urban park in Rio de Janeiro. The brightly colored parrots have not lived in the city for 200 years, having disappeared after deforestation in the 18th and early 19th centuries drove them from the area. In addition to the macaws, ecologists are reintroducing other native fauna to the 10,000-acre forested park, including howler monkeys, red-rumped agouti, and yellow-footed tortoises.

One team of divers focused on safely extracting the four astronauts, while another worked to recover the debris from the water.

landmark

From the headlines: The Los Angeles City Council designated the Brady Bunch house as a cultural landmark. The North Hollywood midcentury modern home was used for exterior shots in the TV show’s opening credits, and its interior has since been restored to perfectly match indoor shots, which were filmed on a studio set. The president of the L.A. Conservancy said the house has historical significance because it “helped shape America’s vision of family life in the late 1960s and early ’70s.”
