  1. A political leader of the 1920s and 1930s who served as governor of Louisiana and represented that state in the Senate. He promised every family enough money for a home, car, radio, pension, and college education. A demagogue, Long dominated Louisiana's politics and pushed aside opposition. He planned to run for president but was assassinated before he could do so.
