Instagram said in October it would help protect teenagers with a new system to limit what young people can see that is consistent with PG-13 movie ratings.
The MPA’s movie-ratings system, which assigns designations of G, PG, PG-13, R and NC-17 to films, relies on a group composed of American parents who have children between the ages of 5 and 15 when they begin their roles.
A post on the company’s website, explaining the new PG-13 guidance for Instagram, said it updated its “AI experiences for teens” so responses shouldn’t “feel out of place in a PG-13 movie.”
“To make things simpler for them, we updated our teen content policies to be closer to PG-13 movie standards—which parents already know. We know social media isn’t the same as movies, but we made this change to support parents, and we hope to work with the MPA to continue bringing families this clarity.”
In a response to the MPA’s cease and desist letter, Meta said it never claimed or implied that its teen accounts were officially PG-13 rated or certified by the MPA.
