Etymology

Origin of asshat

First recorded in 2000–05; ass 2 ( def. ) + hat ( def. 1 ); of uncertain origin; perhaps from the expression “to have one's head up one's ass” (and thus to wear one's ass as a hat); perhaps from the movie The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976), in which one character orders another to “get in line before I kick you so hard you’ll be wearin’ your ass for a hat”
