First recorded in 1940–45; slang term among U.S. Army Air Force personnel stationed in New Guinea during World War II, borrowed from Australian soldiers also stationed there, and originally meaning “10 pounds of shit in a 5-pound bag,” also “2 quarts of whiskey in a half-pint bottle”
