cricothyroid muscle

n.
  1. A muscle with origin from the anterior surface of the arch of the cricoid, with insertion either upward to the ala of the thyroid or outward to the inferior cornu of the thyroid, with nerve supply from the superior laryngeal nerve, and whose action makes the vocal folds tense.
