MORE ABOUT FATHER'S DAY

What is Father's Day?

Father’s Day is a holiday to honor and celebrate fathers and father figures.

Many people celebrate the day by giving their father cards or gifts, doing nice things for him, or spending the day with him or calling him (which you should do even when it’s not Father’s Day).

The spelling Father’s Day—with an apostrophe after Father—is considered standard (as opposed to Fathers Day or Fathers’ Day).

When is Father’s Day?

In 2023, Father’s Day will be celebrated on Sunday, June 18, in the U.S., the U.K., Canada, India, and many other countries. In these places, it’s always celebrated on the third Sunday in June. In 2024, Father’s Day will fall on June 16.

In some countries, especially in Europe and Latin America, Father’s Day is celebrated on March 19, St Joseph’s Day.

It is celebrated on various dates in other places, including on the first Sunday in September in Australia and New Zealand.

Where does Father's Day come from?

The first Father’s Day was celebrated in the U.S. state of Washington in 1910 following a campaign by Sonora Smart Dodd, who was inspired by Mother’s Day celebrations.

The holiday gradually got more popular, being observed in 1916 by President Woodrow Wilson and in 1924 by President Calvin Coolidge, who advocated for states to observe the holiday. It was officially adopted as a national holiday in the U.S. in 1972 (but it is not a federal holiday).

For some, Father’s Day is a day to honor their stepfather, the grandfather who raised them, or another father figure in their life. It’s important to be mindful that Father’s Day can be a difficult holiday for some, including fathers who have lost children and people who have lost their fathers.
