McGovern, George

1. A political leader of the twentieth century, who, after representing South Dakota in the Senate, lost the presidential election of 1972 to President Richard Nixon. McGovern, a liberal Democrat, was an outspoken opponent of the involvement of the United States in the Vietnam War.

In the election of 1972, McGovern received majorities only in Massachusetts and in the District of Columbia.
