Haydn, Franz Josef

  1. An eighteenth-century Austrian composer, one of the great composers of the classic era. Haydn is credited with establishing the symphony as a musical form. Of his more than one hundred symphonies, Surprise Symphony and Clock Symphony are especially well known. He also composed many string quartets.
