Hiawatha, The Song of

1. (1855) An epic by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow , based on the story of an actual Native American hero. The historical Hiawatha was an Onondaga from what is now New York state, but Longfellow makes him an Ojibwa living near Lake Superior .
