  1. The scientific study of the gathering, manipulation, classification, storage, and retrieval of recorded knowledge. Information science involves the development and analysis of methods of classifying information, as in a library's card catalog, as well as the use of computer systems for archiving information and identifying and retrieving information relevant to specific purposes. Information science also deals with the history of recorded information in various writing systems and media such as papyrus, paper, and microfiche.
