Nehru, Jawaharlal

  1. An Indian political leader of the twentieth century. Nehru was a close associate of Mahatma Gandhi in the struggle for independence from Britain in India during the 1930s and 1940s. After independence, he served as the country's first prime minister , steering Indian foreign policy toward nonalignment ( see nonaligned nations ). Nehru died in 1964.
