  1. An Indian political leader of the twentieth century. Nehru was a close associate of Mahatma Gandhi in the struggle for independence from Britain in India during the 1930s and 1940s. After independence, he served as the country's first prime minister, steering Indian foreign policy toward nonalignment (see nonaligned nations). Nehru died in 1964.
