Genetics. the principle, originated by Gregor Mendel, stating that when a pair of inherited traits has two possible expressions, one of those expressions will be dominant and the other recessive, and only the dominant one will be expressed: in modern genetics, this is understood to be only one of several possible patterns for gene expression.
