A way of transferring information via the telecommunications system that breaks up a message or file to be sent into smaller data packets and then sends the these packets along whatever routes are available to their final destination. The packets are then reassembled to reform the original message. This type of system is essential to the communications industry and the effective functioning of the Internet today.
