First recorded in 1745–55, originally, an Indian moccasin with an extra sole, by folk etymology from Delaware Jargon ( Swedish spelling) síppack, ( English spelling) seppock “shoe,” from Unami Delaware čípahkɔ “shoes” (singular čí·p·akw, cognate with Northern Unami ( German spelling) machtschipak )
