A muscle with origin from the seventh to the twelfth costal cartilages, lumbar fascia, iliac crest, and inguinal ligament; with insertion into the xiphoid cartilage, linea alba, and the pubic tubercle and pecten, with nerve supply from the lower thoracic nerve, and whose action compresses the abdominal contents.
