Cartography. a commonly used projection that is a compromise between the rectangular or Mercator projection and the Aitoff projection in an effort to reduce distortion of area, distance, and direction. Like the Robinson projection, it projects the earth's surface onto an ellipse with truncated top and bottom, but with greater height, so that the lines representing poles are shorter and the lines of latitude, as well as of longitude, are curved.
