Where does ๐Ÿ—ฝ Statue of Liberty emoji come from?

France gave the the actual Statue of Liberty to the US in 1886, where the now-greened copper monument was put on Liberty Island in New York Harbor off New York City. Styled after the Roman personification of liberty, Libertas, she holds up over her crowned head an ever-burning torch in her right hand and carries a tablet inscribed with July 4, 1776, or Independence Day, in her left.

From the late 1800s to the 1950s, the Statue of Liberty was a welcoming sight for the millions of immigrants who were processed on neighboring Ellis Island. This history has made the Statue of Liberty an icon for the US recognized worldwide and a symbol of freedom, democracy, justice, pluralism, and diversity.

And this history all comes to bear on the Statue of Liberty emoji, approved under Unicode 6.0 in 2010. The emoji also answers to Lady Liberty, a common nickname for the statue, and New York emoji.

Across platforms, the design of the Statue of Liberty emoji varies. Apple and Google shows her crown and torch while Twitter and Facebook zoom in her on her face.

Fun fact: This is the poem inscribed on her base by Emma Lazarus, who wrote the lines now synonymous with the statue:

Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shoreโ€ฆ
