Where does 🧸 Teddy Bear emoji come from?

As modern legend has it, the teddy bear was created in 1902 by Brooklyn toymaker Morris Michtom. He was inspired by an act of mercy, popularly depicted in a political cartoon, on the part of President Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt who refused to shoot a bear that was tied to a tree on a hunting trip.

Michtom put the soft, plush bear in the window of his shop with a sign “Teddy’s bear.” The name, eventually morphed into teddy bear, stuck, and the toy became one of the most popular the world over.

Teddy bears didn’t make it into emoji-land until 2018 under Unicode 11.0, though there are scores of bear kaomoji, a form of Japanese emoticons developed in the 1980s, as well as the popular bear face emoji  🐻 which debuted in 2010.

In July 2017, Ariel Jacobs proposed a teddy bear emoji to the Unicode Consortium (which governs emoji standards), observing: “While there are many work-related emoji, there are no emojis that currently represent toys.” Jacobs added that a teddy bear would make for a useful distinction from the bear face emoji  🐻, which has been sometimes previously used for teddy bears online.
