What does weagle mean?
A weagle is a fictional eagle-like bird. It is the logo of the Washington Capitals NHL team.

Where does Weagle come from?
The Weagle logo of the Washington Capitals hockey team is designed to look like the national bird with the shape of the US Capitol building represented in the negative space beneath the bird’s head. It’s also shaped like a W, representing Washington D.C., where the team plays its home games in the Capital One Arena.

Although the Weagle is popular with fans, appearing on memorabilia and even in fan tattoos, you’ll be outed as a fake fan if you call it the Caps’ mascot. That honor goes to Slapshot, a large bald eagle (not a weagle!) who wears the number 00.

Who uses Weagle?
Washington Capital fans use both the icon and the word weagle when talking about their favorite team in regular speech and online.
Twitter has made that easier by adding an icon (or hashflag) of the weagle that automatically appears on all tweets that include the Capitals’ official social-media hashtag #ALLCAPS.
It only took me 11 years but I finally realized the weagle logo is also a W.
