What does chud mean?
Chud is an insult for a loser, troll, or jerk. The term usually applies to men and can be used as a general descriptor for someone who is rude or unpleasant. In political contexts, chud can refer to someone with far-right views. Though the term is typically considered an insult, some on the right have reclaimed it as a self-descriptor.
Where does chud come from?
Chud is thought to originate from the 1984 movie C.H.U.D. about “cannibalistic humanoid underground dwellers” in the New York City sewer system. In 2017, an episode “From Russia with CHUD” on the left-wing podcast Chapo Trap House popularized the term as an insult for someone with right-wing political views. In 2019, chud spread online via political compass memes, which use a four-quadrant grid to chart political stereotypes, and eventually made its way to 4chan messageboards.

Who uses chud?
Today, you’ll see widespread adoption of chud in posts on X, Bluesky, TikTok, and Facebook. While primarily used by Gen Z and millennials, other generations have also adopted it.
