What does looksmaxxing mean?
Bone smashing, jawline contouring, and limb-lengthening surgery? These are real practices associated with looksmaxxing, an online slang term for the pursuit of maximizing one’s physical appearance.
Popular among young men in Gen Z with high screen time, looksmaxxing falls into two subcategories: softmaxxing and hardmaxxing. Softmaxxing refers to generally harmless glow-ups such as getting a new haircut or trying a new skincare regimen, while hardmaxxing involves more extreme approaches like crash dieting, facial reconstruction surgery, or even bone smashing — which involves hitting one’s face with a hammer based on the (unfounded) belief that it will reshape the bones into a more chiseled look.
Experts warn that looksmaxxing can take an emotional, physical, and financial toll. Not only can the practice cause body dysmorphia, low self-esteem, and depression, but it can also do physical damage through unregulated methods of improving one’s appearance.
Where does looksmaxxing come from?
Looksmaxxing originated in online incel (involuntary celibate) communities, where men discuss experiences of romantic rejection and strategies for improving their appearance. These online communities are sometimes associated with violent, misogynistic content, particularly targeting women. Like other incel slang, looksmaxxing eventually carried over to the mainstream via social media platforms such as TikTok, X, and YouTube. Braden Peters, aka Clavicular, is a controversial young content creator often credited with popularizing looksmaxxing among his Gen Z followers.
