Where does come from?
Though inspired by various historic banners, the country of Greece’s flag is fairly new, officially adopted as the national flag in 1978. It features a white cross on a blue square in its upper left next to alternating blue and white stripes, earning it the name the Blue and White in Greek.
Emoji-wise, the flag for Greece came out in 2015 as part of Unicode’s Emoji 1.0. Some platforms, including Apple and Samsung, give the flag a slight wave in its design to make it look like it’s flying. On older platforms that don’t support the image, the flag for Greece emoji displays as GR, based on Greece’s country code.
Who uses ?
Like most flag emoji, the flag for Greece emoji is used for contemporary topics in Greek politics, sports, culture, language, and national pride and identity. In the 2010s, the emoji appeared in a lot of internet content dealing with Greece’s ongoing financial struggles.

Finally, the island of Cyprus in the southeast Mediterranean has a long and complicated history with both Greece and Turkey. It’s been under divided rule between the two since 1974, with two-thirds occupied by Greek Cypriots, and so the flag for Greece sometimes appears alongside the flag for Cyprus emoji, 🇨🇾, due to their closely tied heritage.
