The nerd face emoji was approved in 2015 under Unicode 8.0 alongside other popular smileys, including the thinking face 🤔 and face with rolling eyes 🙄 emoji.

The emoji is fairly uniform across platforms, with its oversized glasses and protruding teeth, a stereotypical nerd look popularized in part by cultural items like the Revenge of the Nerds films. Google opts for an overbite rather than buck teeth. The shape of the glasses vary from platform to platform, with Microsoft featuring white tape (another nerd trope).
