The sandwich emoji was approved as part of Unicode 10.0 in 2017 and added to Emoji 5.0 in 2017. Sandwiches got there name from an old dude from a long, long time ago. In 1755–65 the word was first recorded and was named after the fourth Earl of Sandwich (1718–92).
