General Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

We’ve put together some commonly asked questions to give you the information you need. If you still can’t find an answer to your question, please drop us an email at tutors@dictionary.com.

Q: How does the tutoring work?

Dictionary.com offers a fully online tutoring service. Tutoring sessions take place using the online conferencing tool Zoom, which can run in your web browser or via the Zoom application.

Q: How do I schedule a tutoring session?

Scheduling a session is simple. Visit https://www.dictionary.com/find-a-tutor and click Find A Tutor. From there, you can select the grade level to see available subjects. Select a subject, view the tutors’ short bios, then select the tutors who you think would be a good fit. You will see those tutors’ available time slots, and then you can book a session instantly!

Q: What can I get help with?

Our tutors can assist with English reading, writing, vocabulary building, math, and homework help.

Q: How do I request and receive a refund?

If you pay with your credit card at checkout, a refund will be issued within 5-10 working days if you cancel a scheduled session at least 24 hours prior to the session start time. If you need further assistance, please contact tutors@dictionary.com.

Q: When are the tutors available?

You can find tutors’ availability directly through our online booking system.

Q: How can I schedule a session with a tutor?

You can either request an on-demand session with any available tutor or schedule an appointment with a specific tutor. To find a tutor and set up an appointment (at least 48 hours in advance), sign into your account and select the applicable age and subjects.

Q: Can I work with the same tutor again?

Yes. You can select that tutor in our online booking system to see when they are available to have another session. The demand is high, so we encourage you to book recurring sessions with the same tutor whenever possible to secure the available slots!

Q: What if my tutor doesn’t show up?

Please contact tutors@dictionary.com. We will refund the session cost for you.

Q: Can I invite my family member to create another account and help manage the scheduling?

Cancellation, Reschedule, and Late Arrival Policies

Please carefully review our cancellation policy to understand the consequences if a student or a tutor misses a session. To avoid fees or penalties, please provide 24-hour notice to cancel or reschedule a session. Until a session is confirmed, changes or cancellation will not have any penalties.

If A Student Misses A Session

Cancelling a session

If a student cancels a scheduled session at least 24 hours in advance, the student will not be charged. If a student cancels less than 24 hours before the scheduled session or simply does not show up to a scheduled session, the student will be charged for the total scheduled time. For example, if the student cancels a one-hour session without 24 hours notice, the student will be charged for the one hour that was scheduled.

Late arrival

If a student is running late, they should contact their tutor via email to inform the tutor that they are on the way. The tutor will wait 15 minutes for the student. If in that time the tutor has not heard from the student, the session will be cancelled, and the student will be charged for the total time scheduled.

Rescheduling a session

If a student needs to reschedule a session, the student should contact their tutor as soon as possible. If the student contacts their tutor less than 24 hours before the scheduled session, Dictionary.com may choose to charge the student, depending on the situation, for the last-minute cancellation.

If A Tutor Misses A Session

Cancelling or rescheduling a session

Tutors must provide 24 hour notice to cancel or reschedule a session. If it isn’t possible to give 24 hours of notice, please contact tutors@dictionary.com and we can help find a replacement for your session. If a tutor has cancelled or rescheduled more than three sessions with less than 24 hours of notice without reaching out to Dictionary.com, the tutor will be suspended from matches with students.

Late arrival

If a tutor is running late, they should contact the student/parents/clients via email to inform them that the tutor is on the way. The student will wait 5 minutes for the tutor and the session should extend for 5 more minutes to make up for the loss of time. If 5 minutes have passed and the student has not heard from the tutor, the session will be cancelled, and the tutor will not receive payment for the total time scheduled. The parents/clients will have the option to reschedule the class or get a refund for the missed session.

What happens if I have an emergency and I missed the session?

Please send an email to tutors@dictionary.com stating the reason why you missed the session and provide documentation. Dictionary.com will decide if this will be an excused absence or a tutor no-show session.
