Origin of asseverate
Asseverateis formed from asseverat-, the stem of assevērātus, the past participle of the Latin verb assevērāre “to act or speak seriously or in earnest.” (The Latin adjective sevērus means “serious, grave”). The word entered English in the 18th century, replacing the earlier verb assever.
