  1. An Israeli political leader of the twentieth century. Meir served as prime minister of Israel from 1969 to 1974 and was known for her efforts to lessen the Arab-Israeli conflict through diplomacy. Arab forces, attacking in 1973, caught her country by surprise and inflicted heavy losses.
