Bromine water is a convenient agent for oxidizing cobaltous to cobaltic ions (see Chapter XV).

Cobaltous hydroxide, Co(OH)2, is formed when a cobaltous salt is precipitated by caustic potash in the absence of air.

It is readily soluble in warm dilute mineral acids forming cobaltous salts.
