Davis, Jefferson

Cultural  

1. A political leader of the nineteenth century. He was a powerful cabinet officer in the 1850s. When his home state of Mississippi seceded from the Union (see secession), Davis left the Senate to join the government of the Confederacy. He served as president of the Confederacy throughout its existence.
