An American spiritual (see also spiritual), based on the story of Joshua, the successor of Moses in the Old Testament, who led the Israelites into the Promised Land. It begins:
Joshua fit [fought] the battle of Jericho,
Jericho, Jericho;
Joshua fit the battle of Jericho,
And the walls came tumbling down.
