Thatcher, Margaret

  1. An English political leader of the twentieth century, who became prime minister of Britain in 1979. A member of the Conservative party (Tories), Thatcher stressed private enterprise and attacked socialism and the welfare state (see also welfare state). She resigned from office in 1990.
