Origin of Mixtec
First recorded in 1840–50; from Mexican Spanish mixteco, from Nahuatl mixtēcah, plural of mixtēcatl “person from Mixtlān ” ( mix ( tli ) “cloud” + -tlān locative suffix, -tēcatl suffix of personal nouns)
