Stuyvesant, Peter

1. A notoriously hot-tempered governor of the Dutch colony of New Netherland. In 1664, he surrendered it to the English, who renamed it New York.

Stuyvesant's most familiar feature was his artificial right leg, fitted with silver ornaments.
