Etymology

Origin of Trinity

First recorded in 1175–1225; Middle English Trinite, from Old French, from Late Latin trīnitās “triad, trio, the Trinity”; equivalent to trine + -ity

Explanation

A trinity is a unit made up of three — like the famous Christian trinity of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. The prefix tri — which can also be found in triangle — is a clue that this word has to do with the number three. If three people are in charge of a project together, they could be considered a trinity, and a three-person band could be called a trinity.
