van Gogh, Vincent

[(van goh, vahn khohkh)]

A nineteenth-century Dutch painter. Van Gogh, a troubled genius who cut off one of his ears in a fit of depression, eventually committed suicide. His work, though virtually unknown during his lifetime, is now highly regarded. Starry Night and Sunflowers are two of his best-known paintings.
