either of two related baryons containing two strange quarks, one neutral with a mass of 2,573 times that of an electron and an average lifetime of 2.9 × 10-10 seconds, and the other negatively charged with a mass of 2,586 times that of an electron and an average lifetime of 1.6 × 10-10 seconds.
