What does glaze mean?
If someone is giving you rapidfire compliments about everything from your outfit to your aura, chances are they might be glazing. Glaze is slang for showering someone or something with excessive praise. Glaze, used as both a verb and a noun, is usually viewed negatively, implying that someone is insincere and just trying to suck up. (The person who glazes, by the way, is called a glazer.)
Where does glaze come from?
Like many slang terms, the origins of glaze are a little murky. But it’s thought to have begun circulating on social platforms around 2021, with users such as @ratthws creating viral posts about it on X. On Twitch, streamers like Kai Cenat and Duke Dennis frequently used the term, helping push it into the mainstream as their clips spread to YouTube and TikTok.
The non-slang definition of glaze (verb) is “to cover with a smooth, glossy surface or coating,” as in a donut or ceramic bowl. On social media, the slang glaze is sometimes paired with a gif of a donut being glazed. In other words, when you’re glazing, you’re laying the sweetness on thick.

The term 'glazing' is often overused without a clear understanding of its true definition. This isn't a critique of any specific creator or group, but a clarification on what glazing truly entails.
Who uses glaze?
Glaze is popular among Generation Alpha, who use it in real life to call out overhyping when they see it, e.g., “Stop glazing” or “Stop the glaze.” You’ll also see it in posts on X, and in Twitch and YouTube chats, where viewers drop glaze in their real-time commentary on livestreams. While some critics argue that glaze is overused in the negative sense, it’s starting to take on a positive connotation, with TikTokers encouraging followers to “self-glaze” or “start glazing themselves,” i.e., hype themselves up.
