maxxing

[ maks-ing ]

What does maxxing mean?

Maxxing (sometimes -maxxing) is short for “maximizing.” This trendy suffix can be added to the end of any word to convey you’re doing something to the fullest or optimizing it as much as possible.

Some of the most common maxxing terms originated in online incel (involuntary celibate) communities, like looksmaxxing for optimizing one’s appearance, and jestermaxxing for acting clownish around women to compensate for lack of looks or money. Then there’s pheromone maxxing, an offshoot of looksmaxxing, where men forgo showering in an effort to attract women through pheromones. You may have heard maxxing used in wellness or self-improvement talk, like sleepmaxxing (hacking the best possible night’s sleep), or personalitymaxxing (becoming the most likeable version of yourself). Really, anything in your life can get the maxxing treatment, if you do it wholeheartedly enough.

Where does maxxing come from?

Maxxing derives from gamer jargon “min-maxing,” which means optimizing a character in role play or video game for the best chance at success. This concept of strategizing for peak performance then spread to incel communities, where it evolved to the spelling maxx (most notably looksmaxxing, hardmaxxing, and softmaxxing). The catchiness and one-size-fits-all nature of the suffix led to its adoption on TikTok in the 2020s, where people began applying it to everything. (And we mean literally everything!)

Healthmaxxing isn't new. Before the wearables, biohacks, peptides and protocols, there were the fundamentals: lift heavy, eat well, build muscle, protect your metabolism. The basics will never stop working.

Who uses maxxing?

The term is popular with Gen Z and Gen Alpha, but you’ll also hear older generations use maxxing online and in real life, whether they’re referencing a popular trend or throwing the suffix on the end of literally any word to be a little cheeky. Similar to the slang “in my __ era,” maxxing has proliferated in language to the point that it may have lost its meaning. Dare we suggest we’re now maxx-maxxing?
