Imagine a company encouraging their employees to use as much artificial intelligence (AI) as possible in their workday. There’s even a leaderboard to track progress and dole out rewards. It may sound like the plot of a futuristic novel, but it’s the real-life practice of tokenmaxxing. 

This techie term combines token, a unit of text processed or generated by AI, with maxxing, a slang word for doing something to the fullest. Combined, tokenmaxxing is the practice of using as much AI as possible, especially in the context of doing one’s job. Bosses may view tokenmaxxing as a way to boost productivity and keep their companies on the cutting edge of AI.

Where does tokenmaxxing come from?

Tokenmaxxing originated in Silicon Valley tech culture. In response to execs at major companies like Meta and Amazon encouraging their employees to maximize AI usage, some workers jumped at the challenge and began calling it tokenmaxxing as slang and shorthand for AI token spend. 

The term rose to prominence in 2026 amid other maxxing slang words. Maxxing itself originated in gamer communities, where it referred to optimizing the performance of a video game character.

Despite tokenmaxxing‘s spike in popularity in spring and summer 2026, some execs have done a 180 after realizing that the money spent on advanced AI models may outweigh the gains in employee productivity. Thus, the opposite trend has also emerged in the workplace — tokenminning, short for “token minimizing.”
